How Much Carpet?

To estimate the amount of carpeting, measure room’s longest and widest points in feet (including doorways and alcoves). Add 3 in. to each dimension. Multiply width by length and divide the result by 9 to get the number of square yards needed. Carpet comes 12 and 15 ft. wide. If possible, avoid seams or place them in low-traffic areas (Berbers and textured styles make hiding seams difficult). Lay carpet with pile in same direction and match patterns.

Carpet Installation Tools

Use professional tools for professional results. A seaming iron melts glue on the edges of seaming tape when joining carpet edges. A trimming tool is faster and more accurate than a carpet knife for trimming excess carpet. A power stretcher and extension tubes pull carpet taut between tackless strips. A stair tool sets carpet backing into the inside corners of steps and onto the tackless strips. A knee kicker is used for bumping and tightening carpet onto tackless strips and for stretching carpet in closets and other confined spaces.
